How do you approach healthy food in your family?

Comments from our panel members included:

“I try to cook main meals from scratch, include plenty of fruit in their lunch boxes and buy as few treats as possible.”

“I’m starting to try and watch everyone’s intake. Writing it down really helps.”

“I do my best to provide healthy balanced meals and snacks, organic if possible, but finance sometimes dictates different.”

“Sugar Content is a big one. Labels can be so confusing – says Sugar Free but perhaps full of different forms of sugar eg Sucrose/Fructose etc. Items labeled Reduced Sugar compared to their original product are often more expensive or I find there’s less in the packet. Low fat food can often be loaded with all forms of sugar.”

“I had gall bladder trouble so had to check fat content on everything. I was shocked at the fat and sugar content on so many products so I still keep checking.”

“Try to cook fresh food in healthy ways – avoiding as much processed food as possible. I do look at labels re fat and sugar content, and try to avoid those high in fat.”

“Try and have a good balance, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t but I try not to sweat about it too much.”

“Pack in the fruit and veg as much as possible. I’m ok with limited treats but only if enough healthy food is eaten first.”

“We try to buy foods with low sugar and low salt and we try to encourage kids to eat fruit and veg every day.”
